Algarve Attractions You Shouldn’t Miss

Portugal’s Algarve is a fabulous place for a holiday and a great region to invest in property. With so much to see and do you’ll never tire of this incredible area!

Silves

Surrounded by orange groves and valleys, the red sandstone castle at Silves demonstrates the important history of Moores in the area. Once a residence for famous orators and poets, the castle is now a major tourist attraction. When you pay a visit you can also take in the nearby 13th century cathedral and fascinating archaeological museum.

Via Algarvinia

If you love walking then the 186 mile Via Algarvinia is ideal. Starting at Alcoutim, the route runs across the Algarve’s interior, culminating in Cape St Vincent. Along the way you’ll find plenty of information alerting you to nearby settlements and places of interest. The route is most popular in the spring when wild flowers carpet the fields.

Olhao

A bustling fish market since the Middle Ages, Olhao is the place to buy fresh fish and other culinary delights. With more than 80 retailers selling every kind of seafood under the sun, fish lovers will be delighted by the cornucopia of fruit de mer on offer. Once you’ve shopped your fill, stop for coffee at one of the many pavement cafes that dot the area and settle down for some serious people watching.

Le Meridien Penina

The Algarve’s golf courses are world renowned and Le Meridien Penina is one of the most impressive. The first ever created in the Algarve, the golf course here is famous for its dogleg fifth hole which boasts a lake and a canal.

Sao Lourenco Church

The people of Portugal certainly know how to build churches and the 16th century Sao Lourenco is no exception. Near to Almancil, this tiny gem is packed full of incredible gothic architecture, stunning hand painted tiles and breath-taking gilding.

Vilamoura Marina

One of the best ways to take advantage of the fabulous coastlines of the area is on a mini cruise. You can hire a boat at Vilamoura Marina and travel to your own secluded beach, explore impressive caves, indulge in some fishing or get the adrenalin pumping with deep sea diving. Choose manned or unmanned vessels including speed boats, yachts and catamarans.

Zoo Marine

Learn more about the sea life surrounding the Algarve at Zoo marine, the area’s largest tourist attraction. There’s lots of opportunity to interact with the animals here and get up close and personal with sea lions, dolphins and seals. Young children will also enjoy the gentle fairground rides and water slides.

Mar Ilimitado at Sagres

If you’d prefer to see dolphins in their natural habitat then book an excursion from  Mar Ilimitado at Sagres where you can travel out to sea accompanied by expert marine biologists to see gannets, shearwaters, storm petrels, porpoises and sea turtles at play. Boats are often surrounded by friendly dolphins who love nothing more than popping by to say hello and when you’re back on shore, you’ll find an incredible array of fish restaurants to relax in and dissect your exciting day.
