Indian is rich in culture and traditions. Be it festivals or marriages or any other occasion, Indians celebrated every occasion with great fanaticism and verve. Bright colourful costumes, traditional jewellery, exuberant decorations can be seen on every special occasion in India. Even the foreigners are lured by this charisma and appreciate it’s alive and versatile culture. Some foreigners are so enthralled with Indian culture that they actually marry in the traditional Indian way.

Indian marriages require loads and loads of preparations on both the groom as well as the bride’s side. There are numerous things to decide upon such as date, venue, decoration, food, gifts etc but the most important of all this is the bride’s costume. Every girl dream of her wedding to be the best day in her life and wants it to be very special. She obviously would want to look her best this day. As soon as the marriage is confirmed, the first thing that a bride does is starts shopping for her bridal wear. Usually most of the Indian women wear traditional sarees on their big day. These sarees are made from the topmost quality fabrics and the designs are exclusive with different kinds of embroidery such as stones, kundas, pearls, etc. These sarees are designed keeping in mind the traditions and culture of India.

Types of Indian Bridal Wear:

Though sarees are the most sought after attire for Indian weddings, there are also other costumes that an Indian bride loves to wear.

Salwar Kameez:

In this costume the kameez is usually above knee length, some even wear it much shorter. Salwar is loose pants worn below the kameez. Salwar Kameez can be stitched from various materials such as silk, velvet, and other rich materials. There is also a duppatta that is carried along with the salwar kameez. It is usually the kameez and the duppatta that are elaborated with all kinds of zari work, beads, patches, stone work etc. They come in various styles and patterns and colours.

Ghagra Choli / Lehenga :

In this costume you have a long skirt with a short top on it. You are also given a duppatta which has to be draped around. The skirt and the top along with the duppatta are highlighted with exclusive embellishments and rich works. This attire is usually worn in the Northern Indian.

Now that we are done with different kind of bridal wear, lets look at what significance colours have in a bride’s costume.

RED:

This is the oldest colour worn by an Indian bride. In fact there was a phase when brides worn only red colour outfits. Traditions reveal that signifies purity and well being for the new bride. Though the bright red colour is now a passé, designers have now come up with the most stylish colours in red. Brides now prefer pinks, magenta and many other shades of red.

GOLD:

Brides who wish to look different choose this colour. Gold and Gold colour is the most important part of the bride’s attire. The gold jewellery and rick embellishments in gold are inseparable. Brides who find the rich gold colour to be gaudy can always opt for colours like pearl, pale yellow, etc.

GREEN:

You will observe that many Indian brides wear a combination of green and red. Green is known to indicate growth and prosperity and also represents the colour of mehendi on the bride’s hand. Thus this is a very common combination used by Indian brides.

WHITE:

This colour is mostly worn by the South Indian Brides. In other parts it is usually the grooms who wear this colour or shades of white.
