Skipping meals in the am isn’t going to get you anywhere. If you want to remain happy, healthy, fresh and energetic, you need to have a proper meal at breakfast, and a power meal at that. From time immemorial, dieticians and nutritionists have been emphasizing the importance of breakfast. How many of you still skip breakfast? Do you do it because you don’t have the time or do you do it to lose weight? Either way, you are at the losing end. Skipping breakfast would leave you hungry and tired the rest of the morning. You would fantasize about your favorite dishes instead of concentrating on work and you would probably starting thinking about having a huge lunch to compensate for the skipped breakfast.
Start taking power breakfasts instead of skipping the whole thing. If you are tired of mueslis and cornflakes and orange juices, then try something new. However, you should steer clear from oversized muffins because they are only going to add up calories instead of giving you energy. You must try these instead:
Muffin Sandwich
You don’t have to give up on muffins entirely because you can try out interesting and healthy ways to prepare it. Make a sandwich with hard-boiled eggs, sliced tomatoes/grated tomatoes, part-skim mozzarella made of low fat cheese. Of course, it goes without saying that you should go for a whole wheat English muffin (packed with vitamin B).
Burritos
Alright. It is Mexican food, but this one is completely healthy and cholesterol-free. You can even keep out regular eggs and use egg whites instead. You make burritos with whole wheat tortillas, cheese, egg whites, canned beans and salsa. It is very easy to prepare, is healthy and quite tasty too. Kids will love it.
It is important that you dine on healthy and nutritious food items because muffins and doughnuts just won’t serve the purpose. They will only add to the fat content in your body and make things worse.
Sweetened Brown Rice
Many people do not know the health benefits of brown rice. If you haven’t tried brown rice and wouldn’t mind trying it then you can mix cooked brown rice with dried fruits, honey and cut apples. It is a very tasty dish for the whole family. In case, you do not like brown rice, then you can try barley, millet, buckwheat or rye.
Greek Yogurt
If you are in real hurry and would like to really take off in the morning then you can eat Greek yogurt 2-3 times a week. It gives you all the calcium you need. The plan, non-fat variety would be the best; you can add honey to add sweetness.
Grapefruit, Whole Wheat Toast and Almond Butter
Grapefruit should be made a major part of your breakfast because it has several health benefits. It will cleanse your body, boost your immunity and keep you healthy for the rest of the day. Almond butter is a good alternative for mayonnaise (low-fat mayonnaise is good enough) for whole-wheat toast.
Don’t forget to take a mid-morning snack because it will keep your energy levels high till lunch. You can eat bananas, dried fruits or a fruit salad. Have a look at this chart to get an idea of the servings you should try with health foods and cereals.
