Cashing in on Impulse Buys

Even in times when people are watching the pennies and trying to save on their spending, experts reckon that around 40% of all spending is on impulse buys. We are seduced by the special offers on the supermarket shelves or attracted by the well presented display of treats by the till point. This phenomenon of impulse buying is a huge market for the retailer to tap into, and one of the best ways of doing this is by planning the store layout and investing in point of sale like a pick and mix stand or dump bins.

Layout

Most retailers are aware that it makes sense to put the most profitable brands and products at eye level, and keep the budget range brands at the bottom of the shelves where they are less likely to be noticed. Other profit maximising tips include positioning any special offers and promotions at the end of aisles where they will attract more attention, and using brightly coloured and well designed point of sale material like shelf talkers will draw the eye to the products.

Sweets and Treats

One of the main categories where we like to spoil ourselves when shopping is with a sweet treat, and it’s no coincidence that supermarkets position the small packs of chocolate by the till. If there is space on the shop floor, a pick and mix stand can be a great investment as it is highly profitable and not many children or adults can resist the temptation of sweet treats like white chocolate mice or foam bananas. These sorts of bin units come in many different sizes and can be easily tailored to the size of the shop. It is always best to position these sorts of units off ground level so that parents are the ones who are buying the sweets and children are not just helping themselves.
