Unless you live in a remote part of the countryside, the chances are you have neighbours. When taking a dip in your hot tub, you’ll want to have some privacy. Here are some of our favourite ways to avoid prying eyes and nosy neighbours.
Hedges
Plant some tall and thick hedges around your hot tub. Ideally you’ll want to buy fully mature shrubs so that you don’t have to wait months or even years for that little piece of privacy. An evergreen type hedge is probably the best option, as you don’t have to worry too much about fishing out pieces of tree, leaves and petals. Conifer, Laurel, Cedar or Buxus bushes are probably going to achieve the most amount of privacy.
Lattices/Trellis
Install a wooden frame with some relatively cheap Lattice. Trellis or Lattice can be picked up from any big box or even local hardware store. Add some personality to your privacy barrier by staining or varnishing the wood. You can also pick up some vines or climbing plants to fill in those gaps and add even more privacy around your hot tub. Top picks include: Virginia Creepers, Clematis, Honey Suckle, Wisteria or Jasmine. These plants will not only look stunning, they will also add fragrance and shade to your hot tub experience.
High Fences
Why not be an unfriendly neighbour and go ahead and put up that high fence? There’s nothing wrong with it, especially if you live next to a busy street and want to block out some noise as well as neighbourhood snoops. A high fence, if done right, can be a great option for your privacy solutions. A variety of styles, woods and finishes can be achieved. The right accessories, such as post caps, door handles or lighting can finish off a fence perfectly leaving your neighbours something else, other than your hot tub, to be jealous about. These kinds of fences can protect your hot tub covers from getting damaged by pets.
Fabric Panels
Try using fabrics like cotton or canvas to add some privacy or shade to your back yard hot tub area. Build a simple wooden frame around your hot tub, much like the trellis idea, and suspend curtains or panels of material from them. Heck, why not go wild and add some colour to your back yard. Reds, gold, purples and oranges will achieve a Mediterranean feel. For a subtler and maybe more modern look, try using “sails”. Use triangular or square panels of white canvas and weight them down or fasten them at the bottom. Or, go for a romantic style and choose lighter materials like muslin or cotton and have your very own four-poster hot tub.
Sheds
A shed sounds a little less glamorous, but can often be a great solution to those privacy worries. One of the best parts of having a hot tub is being able to gaze at the stars during those late night dips. You may want to consider leaving the roof off or installing removable panels or shutters in the roof. A shed can also prevent kids or creatures from falling in or tampering with the hot tub when you don’t have your eye on it.
So there you have it, some great ways to guarantee your privacy. But, be sure to remember: just because you can’t see your neighbour doesn’t mean they can’t see you! You might want to make sure you’re as “hidden” as you think you are before you kiss that special someone under the moonlight or go for that night time skinny dip in your hot tub!
