Getting engaged is a major landmark in life, and the ring that comes with it is something that the woman you love will hopefully wear for a lifetime. When the engagement is new, she’ll want to be showing it off to all of her friends and family, and so it is crucial that she gets something that she likes and which suits her taste. These days, a lot of men let their fiancées choose their own engagement rings, and while for some women this is a great idea, because they get just what they want, for others it can seem like a bit of a cop out on the man’s part. If you are wondering whether you should choose a ring for your future bride or let her pick one out herself, here are some things to consider:
Do You Understand Her Taste?
Some may think it is a given that a husband will know what his wife likes and be able to pick out, almost intuitively, the ideal thing. However, in reality we all know this isn’t the case. Many perfectly happy couples don’t share the same aesthetic tastes, and if you don’t really know what she likes, for example if she’d love a vintage twenties’ art deco ring or a modern solitaire, then it may be best to let her decide. It can be especially hard if she isn’t someone who wears much jewelry normally, because you can’t be guided by the things you know she likes.
Some women don’t really care about putting on diamond earrings and sparkly bracelets, but actually still prefer glamorous or elaborate engagement rings, because these are special pieces they will wear all the time. Also, a lot of women tend not to buy expensive jewelry for themselves as it seems extravagant, but do still like something quite ornate when it is bought for them. If you have a good idea of her taste then it can be best to buy the ring for her – she’ll be touched that you got it right. If you aren’t sure what she’d like best, take her ring shopping!
Size Matters
Many a proposal where a ring is involved has lost some of its edge because the ring doesn’t fit. Of course they can be resized, but that means she can’t put it on there and then when you propose and it takes some of the romance out of things. However, women’s ring fingers vary wildly in size, and the only real way to find out what size she wears is to ask her, have her measured or use an existing ring she wears on the same finger as a guide. If you have no idea of her size, a trip to the jewelers is going to be in order at some point, so it can be best just to let her choose her own ring and have it sized while she is there. Note if she has especially small or large hands, because this will mean that guesswork when it comes to diamond ring size is even less likely to work.
