With the cooler weather and darker evenings, you may also see a flurry of activity as householders rush to update their surroundings. There are plenty of ways to accomplish a new look with very little effort, as well as some big changes to really shake things up.
Colours
As the leaves turn to beautiful yellows, reds and browns, interiors buck that trend with an influx of green in all shades. From subtle pastels and bright spring greens to deep, rich moss and Lincoln greens, we’re seeing this colour in furnishings, haberdashery and paints, with emerald standing out as the most sought-after colour on the market. If you want to use a dark colour, to help your brighter colours stand out, choose a very dark blue rather than black if you want to stay on trend.

‘Grease’ isn’t the word anymore, because ‘brass’ is! Whether you want to include a coffee table with brass legs, large brass planters or simply to change all your handles and light-fittings, it has to be brass. Make the most of the wide availability of brass accessories to bring that unique and subtle warmth to your rooms; with smaller items – such as bookends – easy to obtain, as well as larger fittings like curtain poles, now is the time to make that statement.
The shine on the brass isn’t the only one you’ll see this autumn. Highly polished, high-gloss finishes are also at the forefront, including lacquered tables and shelving, thick gloss paint on doors and even making an appearance on old sideboards, as upcycling takes a turn in the spotlight.
Cosy Kitchens
At the heart of the kitchen, you’ll find the stove. If you make it a wood burning one, you’re keeping up with the Jones’, the Smiths and anybody else who has a finger on the pulse, because woodburning stoves bring a special kind of cosiness to a kitchen, as well as being kind to the environment. Couple this with a few vintage – or faux vintage – touches, such as weathered concrete flooring, mismatched tiles and gingham blinds for the full old-fashioned ‘Grandma’s kitchen’ look and you will have hit the nail on the head. Brass accessories can be an attractive addition to this theme.
With so many of these trends complimenting each other, you can pick and choose to get the look that makes the most sense for your lifestyle and the fixtures and fittings that have to be incorporated. Whichever trends you choose, you’re sure to find a way to make them your own.
