Getting Things Started Correctly
Much like most jobs, it’s a good idea to prepare things ahead of time so that you know what you’re doing when it comes time to do the job. Painting is no different. For one, it’s recommended to have a tool station prepared. A tool station is a small area that you can work in where all your painting related material will be within arm’s reach. The tools that you’ll be needed for most paint jobs include:
- Brushes
- Rollers
- A hammer
- A screwdriver
- Plastic wrap
- Rags
In addition to all these things you should also think about getting latex gloves, a mask to cover your nose and mouth and clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. Not only will these things protect you from breathing in an getting stained with the paint, but it’s also a relief knowing that any spills you may have won’t ruin your good clothes.
Make a Day for Preparation
Pick a day of the week where you don’t have anything planned. This will be the day that you can go and pick out the paint colors and get advice for what kind of paint you will need for the job. It’s also a good idea to get some wall tape so you can shield off the areas you don’t want to get any paint in. When you get home, clear away all the furniture in the house that could get touched by paint. Anything that’s on the wall needs to be removed. Use drop cloths on anything else that is too heavy to move. Cover everything with as much plastic as you have.
Pulling Everything Out
Next it’s time to put the screwdriver and hammer to use. Remove any and all door knobs, outlet covers and various hardware related stuff that is hooked up around the wall region. Keep the items in a bag and save them for when you reapply them afterwards. It might seem a bit extreme, but you’re going to be grateful afterwards when you see how spotless everything else against the new coat of paint. If you feel up to it you can even clean up the hardware before putting them back on the wall. By doing this you’ll be killing two birds with one stone to make the room look better than ever before. Just try to remember where everything goes!
Watch Out for Bad Walls
Not all walls are going to be smooth and ready for painting. Sometimes a wall will have a large hole or there could be a crack caused by years of use. These should be fixed before any proper painting can begin. Any local hardware store will direct you with what you need to fix the wall. One quick solution is to use fiberglass tape or spackle to fill holes of various sizes. Once it’s fixed properly, then you can start to work on painting the area. Use caution when working on these recently repaired walls.
